Cannabidiol can also be known as CBD, Cannabidiol or CBD oil. It is a plant-based chemical discovered in 1940, which belongs to two different families – the Cannabidaceae and the Odontaceae. It is currently one of the first identified and scientifically validated natural substances that have anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogen properties. It is one of the few natural substances that can perform the dual roles of antioxidant as well as an anti-mutagen.
In Brazil, the first study on CBD’s therapeutic benefits was conducted. The goal was to help people with multiple sclerosis (MS), which is where inflammation was suspected to be a factor. The researchers discovered that CBD decreased the amount of inflammatory cells as well as the glial cells (neutrophil cells). Further studies have shown that CBD can be used alone to exhibit significant anti-inflammatory properties. CBD has been shown to reduce inflammation in patients with multiple sclerosis.
There have been preliminary studies regarding the effect of CBD on blood pressure that is high, but these were not conclusive. CBD has not been proven to be efficient in treating hypertension. Some researchers believe that high blood pressure can be treated by lowering the weight of the patient’s body through exercise and diet and others believe that CBD could cause undesirable side consequences for the cardiovascular system. CBD’s effects upon hypertension and other cardiac issues will require further research.
In the most recent human study found here, one study showed that CBD significantly reduced the risk of sudden death in Parkinson’s disease patients. In this case, the CBD was administered intravenously and the results indicated that CBD reduced the risk of death. This is a positive result and has great potential as an antiparkinsonian medication. This research will require more research to confirm them.
The most commonly used use of CBD is to treat chronic pain. Animal studies have shown that CBD can reduce pain without increasing the dose or frequency. One study found that CBD was given to animals after they had received pentobarbital, barbiturates that are fatal doses. All of the animals experienced no discomfort or pain following CBD administration for a single day. Similar to that, CBD has been administered to patients suffering from testicular cancer who suffer from impotence, and did not alter the levels of testosterone in the body, which is the chemical responsible for sexual function.
In addition to relieving the suffering of humans, CBD has been shown to improve the quality of life for certain ailments. For example in a study conducted at the University of Illinois’ College of Medicine CBD was found to have an impact on those suffering with chronic pain. Those given CBD had a better level of quality of life than those who received placebos. Similar findings were also previously reported by researchers. The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Disease as well as the National Institutes of Health, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture supported the study.
Depression and anxiety are two other areas in which CBD has been studied. Two studies on animals have proven that CBD can help reduce anxiety and depression symptoms. In one study, mice were fed dosages of CBD that were half the size of those found in a clinical trial involving Sativex an anti-anxiety medication. The mice had better locomotion and grooming times that were shorter than the controls.
